On the 28th of March 2022, a train from Abuja to Kaduna is attacked by terrorists. A month before, a young woman with big dreams finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Five years before then, two best friends survive a horrific assault that alters the course of their lives. In a mosque, a madman weeps every night in the room where an old man died.

Each story in Nana Sule’s debut collection, Not So Terrible People, is intricately linked and skilfully crafted. Grand themes, ideas and concepts are deftly explored, creating a prism effect where every story is like tilting the angle to catch a different wavelength, or perspective, of life. From the heavens to a souk in Kano; from the dorms in Ahmadu Bello University to a chemist shop in Kurmi; from domestic disputes to grand conspiracies; ordinary-seeming people will collide with ancient, unthinkable power.

Nana Sule

Nana Sule is a writer, journalist, and communications strategist. She curates literary events and co-owns The Third Space, a bookstore and workstation in Kano. Her works have been published in Agbowo, Isele, and Arts-Muse Fair. She was the first runner-up for the 2022 Alitfest Prize for Fiction and was longlisted for the 2023 Sevhage Prize for Fiction for her short story, Owanyi. Nana aims to craft stories that feel familiar yet imbued with the unexpected. She also indulges in a love for chocolate.

“This is a daring, technically accomplished work of fiction, announcing the arrival of an exciting new voice in Nigerian literature.”

—Helon Habila, author of Travellers

“Astonishing tales of women, ghosts, angels and jinn, told through a haunting many-textured lens. Nana Sule's first collection is a triumph.”

—Dare Segun Falowo, author of Caged Ocean Dub

“Following a tradition perfected by Ben Okri, Samantha Schewblin and Leslie Nnneka Arimah, Nana Sule has demonstrated adept skill at exploring the marvellous yet uncanny interaction between the seen and the unseen, the hidden and the known, the physical and the spirit. Much like the Psalms or Kalila wa Dimna, this is a gospel of love, courage, and redemption.”

—Umar Abubakar Sidi, author of The Incredible Dreams of Garba Dakaskus
