In a country caught between the weight of its contradictions, three lives circle one another—each grappling with what it means to belong, to endure, to choose—as they navigate the intimate terrain of love, illness, parenthood, and self-reinvention. Dakota, biracial, bold, and battle-scarred, longs to be a mother again years after separating from her ex-husband and losing custody of her son. Abazu, a guarded restaurateur living with HIV, grapples with grief, self-worth, and the risk of intimacy. Dilibe, drawn to solitude, unexpectedly opens his life to love, challenging everything he once believed about commitment.

In a city teeming with noise and expectation, they find quiet in one another—and in the lives they are slowly, imperfectly, learning to choose. Lyrical, reflective, and deeply human, The Quiet That Remains is a luminous exploration of identity, friendship, and the weight of what we carry in silence. With prose as intimate as breath, Jude Dibia delivers a story about the resilience of chosen family, the cost of secrecy, and the ache of hope that refuses to fade.

"A timely, exquisite gem . . . marking a magnificent return of one of Africa's most remarkable pioneers."

—Chukwuebuka Ibeh, author of Blessings

“Jude writes this gentle-eyed study of belonging with signature muted power. A tender story of three friends Dilibe, Dakota and Abazu whose studiedly detached lives in a dream-like Lagos is often interrupted by expectations, indignations and fears; some of which are their own. In confronting these interruptions, they are forced to face up to, live up to or leave behind the hopes hidden deep within; for a life much more possible. A compelling read.”

—Funmi Iyanda, award-winning film and TV producer, media personality, journalist and philanthropist

“As he immerses us in a beautiful and unforgettable world, Jude Dibia manages to balance his razor-sharp observations with a very tender and compassionate eye towards his characters. We could all be Abazu, Dilibe and Dakota, and this is what distinguishes Dibia’s talent: He tells us that this is our world and these are our own friends. So closing the final chapter leaves us feeling like we’ve just been home and have just been held by our loved ones.”

—Kagiso Molope, author of Such A Lonely Lovely Road

“Jude Dibia has crafted a gripping, deeply human novel about desire and isolation, love and sex, enduring friendships and the tangled bonds of family. Set in contemporary Nigeria, his characters linger long after the final page—like familiar companions. A marvellous and unforgettable read.”

—Torbjörn Flygt, author of Slugger

“Jude Dibia’s The Quiet that Remains is more than a fascinating story of three friends trying to balance the burden of staying true to their respective selves while walking life’s tightropes. It’s a thoughtful exploration of one of today’s big questions—What relationships give the most value to life (marriage and family, or friends who stick closer than brothers)? It explores the conflicts between societal expectations and unconventional values. It’s an important and uplifting story about freedoms—freedom to be, freedom from labels, and the freedom to take off one’s mask and dance with abandon.”

—Chimeka Garricks (author of Tomorrow Died Yesterday & A Broken People’s Playlist)
