Waistbeads and Rosaries is a fearless collection of poems that dares to kneel where desire and devotion collide. These poems blur the borders between the sacred and the sensual, asking uncomfortable questions about faith, the body, longing, and freedom.

Bá Sabouke writes from the edge. His voice is erotic without apology, spiritual without submission, and rebellious without pretence. In these pages, the body becomes a site of revelation, love becomes a form of prayer, and transgression becomes a method of truth-telling. Rosaries rattle against waistbeads, and salvation is sought not only in religion but in breath, touch, and yearning.

This is not a book for the cautious reader. It is for those willing to confront desire as a form of belief, and belief as something dangerously alive. Waistbeads and Rosaries does not ask for permission, instead, seduces, provokes, and insists on being read on its own terms.

Bá Sabouke

Bá Sabouke lives in New Bussa, Nigeria. He is the author of A Meccan Spring (Konya Shamsrumi, 2023) and Seeking Barhama (NIRPRI Publishers, 2025). His poetry explores the intersection of spiritual and sensual mysteries of being, often incorporating Sufi, sensual and surrealist themes.

“The poems in Waistbeads and Rosaries blend the spiritual and the erotic in this beautiful smoothie that leaves you yearning for more. Utterly delicious and savory.”

—Nasiba Babale, author of Pickled Moments

“This collection of poems traverses the delicate boundary between the sacred and the sensual, probing the intersections of faith, desire, and defiance. Dwelling in the liminal space where spirituality collides with eroticism, the poet’s bold imagery and uncompromising voice reimagine worship, intimacy, and rebellion as intertwined acts of devotion. Waistbeads and Rosaries offers both a critique of dogma and a celebration of embodied truth.”

—Jalaludeen Ibrahim, author of Trance

“Written in verses that seduce and strangle, this is a book that will haunt you with all its might. In Waistbeads and Rosaries, Sabouke, a disciple of the Master of Transgression, wrestles with faith, desire, and longing. In this collection, he adorns himself in the full regalia of rebellion, stripping belief of its certainty. These poems are baked in the oven of holy heresy; hence they don’t conform with your poetics; they tremble with transgression and a furious search for meaning.”

—Adamu Yahuza Abdullahi, author of The Rainbow Is Not as Beautiful as My Ruins
