A man heads down a remote road to a place called Woop Woop, expecting a simple trip. It turns into something far stranger and far more unsettling than he imagined.

A child tries to understand a complicated father during a swimming lesson that reveals more than it should. A woman who can see what others can’t starts to realise that ability comes with a cost. Elsewhere, small, everyday moments, family tensions, quiet memories, chance encounters, take unexpected turns.

The Road to Woop Woop and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction that blends the familiar with the strange. These stories explore family, identity, grief, and change, but always with something slightly off beneath the surface.

If you like stories that feel real but take a quiet step into the unknown, this collection will pull you in.

“The short stories of Eugen Bacon’s The Road to Woop Woop contort in the audience’s imagination because of their original imagery, unique turns of phrase, and refreshing, diverse cast … Smart, ambitious, and daring … masterful in combining science fiction with reality, resulting in an unforgettable storytelling experience.”

—Tanisha Rule, FOREWORD REVIEWS

“Bacon (Claiming T-Mo) delivers a commanding and visionary collection of speculative shorts, encompassing surrealism, fantasy, science fiction, and gorgeous, painterly literary fiction. It would be a disservice to call any of these 24 stories the standout, as each is impressive and beautifully rendered in Bacon’s distinct, poetic voice… Complex, earnest, and striking, Bacon’s impeccable work is sure to blow readers away.”

—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“Bacon’s stories are languid, endlessly strange things, and she makes them seem effortless. The Road to Woop Woop pushes boundaries, blurs genres and folklores, and reminds us once again of her dazzling, unique voice. No one writes like her.”

—KEITH ROSSON, award-winning author of Road Seven, Smoke City and The Mercy of the Tide

“Some of these stories are chilling, some disturbing, some poignant, some erotic, some sensuous, some humorous, with many incorporating a number of these elements. However, common to each story is the sense of passion which percolates through them, like the words through a stick of seaside rock. This is sometimes quietly gentle, sometimes explosive in its intensity, but is always conveyed using eloquent, poetic language which is a joy to read… the richness of Eugen Bacon’s prose reflects an impression that she writes from the heart, thus creating a feeling of intimacy which immediately draws her readers into the various worlds she has created for her charismatic characters.”

—NB MAGAZINE

“Bacon is at her best when spinning yarns of fantastic creatures and otherworldly beings, many of which derive from African or Australian traditions.”

—BSFA REVIEW

“Bacon’s passion for language and her willingness to play with the short-story form, to never settle on one type of narrative or genre, makes this an exciting collection that’s well worth picking up.”

—LOCUS REVIEW

“Eugen Bacon writes assured, lyrical prose wherein timeless tales bordering multiple genres are hunkered. At the conflux of myth and memory, where cultures meet and twine, her stories devour the past whilst illuminating the future. Reading Bacon is an immersement, a journey. The stories she tells are those to relish.”

—ANDREW HOOK, award-winning editor and author of Frequencies of Existence
