Across eleven quietly arresting stories, The Visit and Other Stories follows people carrying private wounds, unanswered longings, and the small hopes that help them endure. Moving with ease between urban restlessness and village intimacy, these stories follow characters poised at the edge of change: a young woman caught in the crossfire of an expatriate’s panic; a daughter haunted by the twenty-nine steps that separated her father from survival; a mother whose grief sharpens into myth; a girl boarding a bus to Lagos with only hope and her mother’s prayers; a Sunday afternoon that exposes the quiet fault lines in a marriage; a woman living at the far edge of her own mind.

Mogo’s characters walk through worlds touched by illness, loss, superstition, and the occasional presence of the not-quite-living, yet their resilience glimmers in the smallest gestures. What emerges is an intimate, haunting portrait of Nigerian life—its tenderness, its fractures, and the quiet determination that keeps its people reaching toward the light.

Ebele Mogo

Ebele Mogo is a Doctor of Public Health and computational scientist. Her stories have been shortlisted for the Grist Imagine 2200 Prize, the Toyin Falola Prize, the Saraba Writing Prize, and the Forgotten Writers Foundations’ Women Domination Award. In her spare time, she practices jiujitsu, learns languages, and enjoys music and nature.

“Ebele Mogo writes life in fluid form; words that flow effortlessly off the page and into the heart with the warmth of fondness, garlanding the garden-variety living of familiar characters with elegant prose.”

—Olubunmi Familoni, author of The Question Mark at the End of Life

"From the ethereal to the earthly, Mogo weaves a seamless thread of stories that perfectly balance loss and gain."

—Obase-sam Ikoi, author of The Comedian’s Diary

“Ebel Mogo’s The Visit and Other Stories is lyrically charged, urgently rendered body of work, unafraid to illuminate the consuming tragedies woven into Nigeria’s politics, health, marriage, culture, and identity, as well as the relentless consequences of navigating the world as a woman. I found myself disarmed by the elusive beauty of the many forms of love in the collection, only to be swiftly and unflinchingly confronted with the stark realities of adulthood and the emotional toll of tragedy that shapes the lives Ebele Mogo portrays. Mogo writes with both courage and grace, offering stories that linger long after the final page.”

—Patrick Shyaka, author of Where Women Meet Boys

“In The Visit and Other Stories, Ebele Mogo wields language like a scalpel: sharp, deliberate, revealing. Her stories pulse with characters so finely drawn you can feel their weight on the page. There are no neat resolutions here, only the messy, beautiful truth of interiority and the questions we carry. This is a collection that lingers long after the final page.”

—Ama Asantewa Diaka, author of Someone Birthed Them Broken
