Leonard came to England with a plan: work hard, pass his exams . . . become something more. Then he met Natasha.

She is magnetic, unpredictable, and impossible to resist. What starts as a casual encounter quickly spirals into an all-consuming relationship built on sex, secrets, and emotional blind spots neither of them fully understands.

As pressure mounts: from work, from ambition, from within, he begins to lose control of the one thing he thought he had mastered—himself.

British Natasha and the Ashewo Doctor is a raw, unflinching portrait of desire and denial, and the quiet ways people drift into situations they never planned for.

James Edeoghon

James Edeoghon was born in Nigeria and now lives in England where he works as a doctor. He is interested in how desire directs destinies. This is his first novel.

“An engaging tale about life, lust, and the potential wahala of overindulging in ashewo ways in the (British) diaspora.”

—Tomilola Coco Adeyemo, author of Efun’s Jazz

“Raw. Addictive. Unapologetically intimate. This novel explores the thrills and the fallouts of uncontrolled wants and desires.”

—Olukorede S. Yishau, author of Black Market

“The story captivated me from the very first page. James Edeoghon beautifully explores the complexities of unchecked passion and the mess it leaves in its path, while shining a light on the heavy subject of mental health and the challenges black immigrants face.”

—Sarah Haluwa, author of Sinners

“A compelling, thought-provoking work that speaks to the discomfort of being human and the unpredictability of connection. Leo and Natasha are not meant to be liked or judged but to be understood in their full complexity, their flaws laid bare without an apology. They are two of the messiest and most interesting characters I have ever come across. This story is sure to stay with you for years to come.”

—Deborah Kira, author of The Finest Things

"To read James Edeoghon's British Natasha and the Ashewo Doctor is to be immersed in a scintillating and unique culture that is at once deeply personal and universal. One is struck by the importance of this narrative, the first fully documented life of a young Nigerian in the UK's medical ecosystem in contemporary times. The sentences thrill, every page educates and entertains and the reader is enthralled by the quiet confidence and intelligence of the writer. In this book, Edeoghon makes crisp sentences and they come alive in 3-D, an incredible feat in the time of social media."
